The Reading Section
The reading section is the first section of the test. It contains 3 academic reading passages, with around 700 words each, and each passage will have 12 or 13 questions. You have 20 minutes to answer all the questions for each passage.
What are the reading passages about?
TOEFL reading passages are all about academic subjects. They cover subjects areas like art, science, history, and economics. As such, many students find tackling these topics alone very challenging. However, while certain subjects can be quite daunting depending on your personal preferences, the passages are written at a level appropriate for those who have little to no knowledge of the subject area. Therefore, it is important that you try not to focus on the subject area, but focus more on the writing structure. All TOEFL reading passages follow a similar top down approach (general to specific) to their logic, so focusing on this structure will help you to understand the content of the reading passages.
